Zones of the Ocean
The ocean is divided into five different zones, based on the amount of sunlight that reaches them.
These zones are the photic zone, the twilight zone, the deep scattering layer, the abyssal plain, and the hadalpelagic zone. The photic zone has shallow water that much sunlight travels through. It is the layer closest to the surface of the ocean. The hadalpelagic zone is located at the bottom of the ocean and contains very deep waters.
The average depth of the ocean is approximately 12,100 feet below sea level.
The deepest point in the ocean is called Challenger Deep and it is located at the end of the Mariana Trench. It is more than 36,000 feet below sea level!
