I am not sure why, but I have always been intrigued with the idea of drawing pictures using circles. Most likely it is because you can get a pretty good result from simply starting with a circle! The possibilities are endless when it comes to human faces of course, but what else can you make out of a circle?

Where to Start Drawing Pictures Using Circles

This freebie includes the following illustrations:

You can follow the directions on each page regarding the composition of the three animals. If you are a beginner, you can even trace the pictures.

In general, you will follow these steps:

Draw a circle.  If you want it to be a perfect circle you could use a compass. I prefer to free hand draw it (or use the blank templates included in the complete packet). When you free hand draw it, it adds even more character and creativity to the cute drawing.

If you want to practice circular strokes before you start, grab some scrap paper and practice drawing circles with consistency.  Again, I prefer to just wing it. Drawing is relaxing for me if I do not focus on perfectionism. 

Then you will add different features to your unique drawings – eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc. These little details are what make the drawings so cute!

Want to try something different? Try making the same animals but start with a square instead of a circle.  It adds a whole new dimension to your characters!

Want to try this activity a different way?

There are other ways that you can extend this activity.

  • Try drawing smaller circles.
  • Using watercolors and make brush strokes to create the animals
  • vary the width of the lines from very narrow to very think and your animals will look completely different
  • use colored pencils of various shades to color in the animals
  • look around the room you are in – are there other objects or people that you can start to draw using the circle as a base?
